Volunteering at ATypI: 5 Days of Typography, Community, and Creative Storytelling (Why It Mattered)
In April, I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at ATypI—a global gathering for type and design lovers that unfolded over five packed days of talks, workshops, and spontaneous hallway chats. From morning to night, I was immersed in the creative buzz, capturing moments, helping things run smoothly, and soaking up the stories behind the world’s most expressive fonts.
As the only Aussie volunteer there, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But what I found was a beautiful blend of friendship, inspiration, and community—plus a whole new understanding of just how powerful typography is.
Here’s what it was like behind the scenes, and why events like these are so important.
The Power of Presence: More Than Just Volunteering
Volunteering at ATypI wasn’t just about ticking tasks off a list—it was about being part of something bigger. For five full days, I helped support the event from open to close—setting up spaces, guiding attendees, capturing memorable moments, and even jumping into conversations I never expected to have.
Whether it was climbing ladders to help place posters on a wall or recording speakers, being part of the inner workings gave me a deep appreciation for the effort and passion that fuels these events.
And let me tell you—when your role includes helping make an event come to life and seeing it unfold from the front row? That’s a pretty special seat to hold.
The Workshop That Blew Everyone Away
One standout moment was witnessing a workshop by Rodrigo Saiani from Plau Design—a designer who showed us how alive typography can be. He didn’t just talk about type; he moved with it, showing how variable fonts and dynamic movement can shape the narrative and grab attention in bold, unexpected ways.
Rodrigo reminded us that typography isn’t static—it’s emotional, reactive, and wildly engaging when used right. In a world where brands are constantly fighting for attention, his talk was a powerful case for using motion and variation as tools for storytelling. A scroll-stopping brand doesn’t just look good—it moves, responds, and tells a story.
Finding Community (and New Friends) Through Type
I wasn’t sure what to expect being the only Australian volunteer in the mix—but I was welcomed with the warmest energy. Volunteers came from all corners of the world, and every single one was generous, kind, and deeply passionate about design.
What stood out wasn’t just the workshops or talks—it was the in-between moments. The side conversations before the talks, the chats during coffee breaks, the laughter while figuring out tech together… These small moments were where some of the best connections happened.
It’s proof that while design can often feel like a solo pursuit, community is what keeps creativity growing.
What Makes a Talk Great? It’s All in the Story
Over five days, I saw all types of speakers—some technical, some theoretical, some humorous, and others more poetic. But you know what stayed with me? The speakers who told stories. The ones who invited us into their process, their culture, their "why."
Design is emotional. And the best talks are the ones where you don’t just learn something—you feel something.
A Stunning Location—But Room for More Accessibility
ATypI was held in a breathtaking space that brought a sense of grandeur to every session. The architecture, the setting, the atmosphere—it all helped elevate the experience.
But it did spark a thought: how powerful would it be to see events like this hosted in more accessible or affordable locations, so even more designers from different backgrounds could attend?
Creativity should be for everyone, not just those who can afford the airfare or the premium ticket price. Design thrives when voices from every walk of life are in the room.
Why These Events Matter More Than Ever
ATypI reminded me that we need events like this—not just for education, but for connection. In a digital-heavy world, we often default to learning from blogs, reels, or Zoom sessions. But there's something deeply valuable about physically being in a space with others who are just as passionate as you are.
When you hear someone’s voice tremble as they talk about a project that changed their life… when you see someone's face light up during a type demo… when you bond with a stranger over a shared love of ligatures—that’s a real, human, creative connection. And you carry that energy home with you.
Volunteering is a Front-Row Seat to Something Bigger
Volunteering at ATypI was more than a work opportunity—it was a reminder of why I love what I do. It was community, creativity, and connection all rolled into one. I left with new friends, fresh inspiration, and a stronger belief in the power of type and storytelling to move people.
So if you ever get the chance to attend—or better yet, volunteer—at an event like this: say yes. You might just walk away with more than you ever expected.
